Q: Do I need to connect my second unit (old Airport Travel Express) to the internet or can I just power it without any ethernet or internet connection?

I connected my Airport Extreme in one room and the Airport Express in the other. Extreme is the primary and Express the extended. I am not sure, however, that I need to connect the extended unit (Express) to the internet also or whether I only need to power it after I set it up to extend.

If the AirPort Extreme connects to the Internet, then so will the AirPort Express...automatically. Set the AirPort Express up to extend the network and you will be all set.
