I've lost my icons on my desktop. How do I put them back?
How do I return my application icons back to my desktop? They have disappeared.

Are you referring to the Dock?

No, the icons are still in the dock. The rest of my desktop is essentially empty. I would like to add all of the apps back to the desktop.

Were they the actual Apps or Aliases (shortcuts)?
Pete
Just the short cuts. I can still open the apps loaded in the Dock and everything is still in Finder.

Have you tried relaunching your finder from Force Quit under the Apple symbol in your top menu?
Pete
Just did that and no change to the desktop.

You can either try to reinstall from a Time Machine backup from just before this happened, or else just make new aliases.

Finder > Preferences > General > Show these items on the Desktop?
Open a new Finder window, go to Applications(Command + Shift +A). Select a program you want to make a shortcut for, hit the gear button or File menu in the top of the Finder window and Make an Alias, copy/paste the Alias to your desktop.
You guys are all great and have helped me a lot. What seems to have happened is that my Launchpad is no long in my Dock. So, the real question is how do I reinstall the Launchpad in the Dock.
Just open the Applications folder and drag Launchpad into the Dock.
make sure it says finder right next to the apple. Click on view and hit clean up it worked for me
This solved my problem. Thanks!
BINGO!!! Thanks Much!
