Have just upgraded from htc to iPhone 4S.
How do I transfer my contacts? Do I insert my old SIM card first? Which leads me onto how do I put the SIM card in?

YOu should just go to your carrier - they will transfer the contacts for you.
The Apple Store will also transfer them if there is one nearby.
If the old SIM will fit in the iPhone (which is unlikely) you just insert the SIM as described in the manual and use the tool in Settings to transfer contacts. Do this AFTER activating the phone with a new SIM.
The alternative is to get a SIM reader for your computer, import the contacts into an address book app on the computer, then sync that app with the iPhone using iTunes, also described in the manual.
Thanks, have spoken with apple and they have solved the problem, and yes the SIM card did not fit!
