I'm running very low on hard drive space, I moved my iTunes folder to an external HD. Now the audio went down in size significantly but the "back up" space jumped up to 94 GB and I have not cleared any space. What am I doing wrong? (macbook pro, early 2008, OS X 10.8.3)

You have "local snapshots" saved on your hard disk. Time Machine creates them automatically in portable Macs when you have Time Machine activated. See > http://pondini.org/TM/30.html
When the hard disk gets full, local snapshots are deleted, but if you want, you can delete or disable them following the steps on that page, even if it's not needed
94 GB!? so, it said just turn time machine off and it will erase them, but I would like the space now. can it be done quicker, manually?
At the bottom of the page of my first comment, you have the steps to open your snapshots. Try deleting the local snapshots by that way
it says that the folder "volumes" can't be found
You have to type /Volumes, not "volumes". Have you put /Volumes?
got it. about 20 of them. they all have todays date and the time as of a minute ago. do I trash them all?
Correct. Delete all of these folders
