Not sure do you have a good wifi or cellular data connection?

Close out of the mail app, double tap the home button and completely close out of it.

Then do a reset, no data loss. Hold down the home/sleep button together until you see the apple logo and then release, then wait for the phone to boot back up.

Then check your emails.

Could be should give Verizon a call and see if they are down in your area.
