Imessage problems

Hi, i'm using an iphone 3gs. I seem to have a problem with imessage. It's very slow and only works with 3g. I have wifi connection and my other apps are fine with it but my imessage either doesnt work or is very slow. It's really bugging me. I hope someone can help me out. Thanks.
