Click here and read all three steps to the bottom; if your model doesn't support Mac OS X 10.8 but has at least a Core 2 Duo(not Core Duo) or better CPU, phone the online Apple Store and order a download code for Lion 10.7.

first thing you should do is upgrade your RAM to at least 4GB.
then from your OS - upgrade to Snow Leopard which you can purchase online at Apple (not App Store) - if your Macbook doesn't support Mountain Lion - I suggest you stick with Snow Leopard or do what Niel has told you.
