My apple tv is hooked up but not picking up my playlists or any of the music that came off of CD's. The only music showing up is what was downloaded from iTunes.

Are you accessing music via the computers section? If you are under the music section it will only show purchases, unless you have iTunes Match.
I don't know what ITunes match is. And and I am not sure about what the computer section is. When I go to the apple tv and choose music it only has 212 songs out of 1000+.
On the main screen there is an icon called computers. You are going to music, that is accessing your music from the cloud (iTunes purchased).
