I would like to use Bluetooth to display my ipad in AppleTV. Is this possible?

I manage a network for a large corporation and our network is severly locked down. I have a user what wants to mirror her iPad on a TV in the office for presentations. Normally this can be done with AppleTV , however I cannot create an Apple network due to security reasons. Is there a product or way to use Bluetooth to mirror the iPad on a TV ( with AppleTV or not)

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.7)

There is not sufficient bandwidth in Bluetooth to transmit a copy of that many bits in a reasonable time. The result would be very jerky and update in an uneven distracting manner. You'd have to use a faster network system (i.e. wired ethernet) or an actual wire.

I suggest you use one of Apple's cables to produce a TV signal from the iPad. You can leave it plugged into the TV and whoever has the iPad can just plug it in when they want to use that TV. Perhaps one of these:

Sorry, can't carry enough bits fast enough over wireless to carry a whole frame of information. Your user would hit 'next slide' on her iPad and might have to wait 5 seconds for the frame to slowly update on the TV. You would have to use display compression, which is what the Apple TV system lets you do. If you can't use Apple TV then you have to use a physical wire.

I've done so with an AppleTV generation 3, after having set it up fully online and then dropped it's internet connection while at client locations - but only with mixed results. It's an expensive experiment.

If these are keynote presentations and the user has an iPhone, you can plug the phone into the tv to display the pres. and use the ipad as the remote if you're looking for discreet.

If these are video based, you may want to try an app called Plex and an appletv alternative called Roku. I've used this config successfully for some time.

Finally, Simn's answer's are perfectly accurate in regard to BT. Future versions of BT may get there, but unlikely.

Yes, there is a way...although it may be cumbersome. You can get an Apple Airport Express(your own personal wireless router) and set it up at home(create a password and connect your Apple TV and iPad mini). Before you start your presentation make sure your Apple TV and iPad mini are connected to the Airtport Express and don't go out of range to prevent any uncommon occurrences. Of course hook up your Apple TV to the regular television and make sure everything works. Once your presentation starts it will work fine. You will not have Internet connection but your Apple TV and iPad mini will be connected. The Apple TV needs to be connected to the same network(in this case provided from the airport express) that your iPad mini is connected to. This should work...familiarize yourself with the process at home first. It isn't alot of time or work but for a smooth and flawless wireless presentation this will work! I sincerely hope this is helpful.

I've had (and have) the same problem. My institution has a WPA2 Enterprise wi-fi network, which means that the AppleTV cannot easily join it. I've tried installing a corporate certificate, but no way.

As explained in other messages, AppleTV mirroring can be done with an ad hoc network. This can come from (a) a computer sharing its Internet connection via wi-fi; (b) an Airport Express or another Access Point device; a mifi device which distributes wifi from a 3G connection, or... (d) the simplest one, a smartphone (or the device itself) sharing 3G via wifi (personal hotspot).

Now, iPhones have personal hotspot; so do the latest iPad models, right? So nothing else than the device itself would be needed.

If Internet is not needed for the presentation, perhaps the device wouldn't even need to have a data plan. Or, if the phone has it, it need not to be used at all. I have tried this with an Android phone with a data plan: I created a fake name (for example, "appletv") APN (the address the internet service needs to get the data) which of could prevented the phone from reaching the Internet; but the personal hotspot, or personal access point, or however it is called, works anyway, for free.

So, this would probably be the least obtrusive way to have a local wifi network IF the device to be mirrored can't do it.

I've had to do this on boats and airplanes.

If you can buy an AirPort Express too, just plug the Apple TV into the AirPort Express. Create a network with the name Presentation or something like that. Then when the iDevice connects to it, you'll be able to use AirPlay to stream to the TV. If you still need a network connection, you can create a static IP address on the iDevice, then leave the DNS blank, you'll then still get your network connectivity from your cell data and you'll be connected to wifi at the same time.

Good luck!
