Holding shift key doesn't start Safe Mode

I have Macbook OS SL 10.6.8

I just want to clear the font database. The instructions say to start in safe mode, and then restart.

Anyway, I try the basic instruction of holding the Shift Key down immediately when hearing the chimes, and then releasing. But, no matter what I do, I can't get the Macbook to boot into Safe Mode.

Somewhere i seem to remember that when you have the hardware password set you can't boot into safe mode this way??? Or, is my memory false?

Anyway, Macbook is otherwise booting normally. I just don't know how I can get it to boot into Safe Mode!!

Anyone know what I can do?

Okay! Figured it out!

I had to remove the Firmware Password. Got info here:: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1352

Thanks to anyone reading and thinking, etc!
