I've just watched a video on icons for iPad, and the guy switches between the screens via Thumbnails. So you can see at a glance, what's what. Very useful if you have various pages open that are from the same site, and the <title> of the page is mostly the same.
I've read that Tabbed View has replaced it, which seems a little backward, specially on a smaller screen.
Is this true, or has Apple put back the option to use thumbnails, as well as Tabs?
Safari no longer has the thumbnail view. There are some other iPad browsers which still offer this by option. Mercury is one such.
Thumbnail browsing has a couple of downsides: it requires two steps to change tabs and if the pages are similar in appearance it's sometimes hard to tell one from another.

On your first reason, I don't understand. If you had that icon at the top near the back/forth buttons, that opens the icons, why would the tabs be two steps - surely you'd have the tabs as well?
I do get the appearance issue tho. But if you are, for example, looking at BBC News. Often the title of it comes after 'News', and with multiple tabs, you would see which is which so easy. Yet in Thumbnails you would really easy.

sorry, i think the tabbed view is the only one for what your asking about. There are however other browsers in the app store that might suit you that are all based on the same rendering engine, just different features like what your looking for.

Thumbnails requires two steps to change pages: one to show the thumbnails and one more to select the new page thumbnail.
Tabbed browsing requires only one step to change pages: just touch the desired page tab.
Mercury does it, but only in iPhone, not in the iPad.
Tried hard to make it work and research it, then someone on the Mercury forum told me.
So is there another browser that does both Tabs and Thumbnails?
Sleipnir Offers Tabbed Thumbnails for iPad. Kind of the best of both worlds. It also offers grouping of thumbnails in colored bands for easy management.
Look at iCab Mobile as well. Its a great browser. Lots of features.
