Q: Could the Ethernet port died?

Something went wrongly with my router (non Apple) and now, the Emac is self-assigning the IP (169.254.76.130) despite renewing the DHCP lease, resulting in no Internet connect.

Is the Ethernet port dead? If so, what happened?

MacBook pro 2.4GHZ/4GB, Powerbooks G4/1.04, G3 Lombard-400, PB3400, Emac, Mac OS X (10.7)

It means your eMac is not receiving an IP address from the DHCP server (your router).

The reasons can be a defective or misconfigured router, a defective port on either the router or the eMac, a defective cable including its connectors, or a fault within OS X.

The easiest thing to do is to substitute another cable to rule it out as a cause. If you don't have a spare you can temporarily use the one that connects your router to its cable or DSL modem, assuming your modem and your router are two separate devices. If that is not the problem, substitute one of your other Macs for the eMac. If it does not work either, the problem is likely to be your router.

The problem solved, and it was not the Emac...it's the cable modem which can only deliver one IP address. Thanks!
