When I have my headset plugged in, I cannot change the audio source

So my headset is a Turtle Beach Ear Force x11. When I plug it in, it is automatically selected for output, which is fine. But if I want to use my monitor's speakers, I have to unlug the headset from the back of my computer.

Here is how my sound preferences look when the headset is not plugged in. http://i.imgur.com/eLlqxGn.png

When I try to select HMDI it turns blue as if selected, but the headset is automatically reselected.

As stated, this is and always has been the behavior of

plugging into the audio/line out port. This a is a carryover

from the old days of plugging in earphones for privacy

listening. Why in this day and age it is still that way on

Macs is beyond me.

If you are intent on using headphones and still have other

outputs selectable, you may want to get a USB audio adapter.
