I went through 2 Macbook Pros in 3 years. Cost me about $4100. All computers fail at some point.

It is your Dad's money. If he does not see the value in the computer you want then accept what he is willing to provide. Wait until you have your own money to spend on an expensive computer. Maybe when it is your own mney you will understand his hesitation.

All you can do is tell him why you think you need an expensive computer and what the benefits are of getting this computer.

You can tell him "Cheap is expensive, and expensive is cheap". Which is a saying that if you buy cheap things, you will end up in the end spending more than buying a more high quality item, because cheap items break down.

I have went through 3 laptops (Dell, HP and another Dell) in 7 years, all of which broke down. The total cost of this was around $4,000 dollars, not to mention all the apps I had to purchase with them.

I have had this MacBook Pro for the past 5 years and it practically is still new, and seems like it will last another 10 years before I have any problems.

I just moved from a $275 Lenovo Windows 8 laptop to a $3,000 rMBP and both can do email and surf the internet pretty well so it may be a hard sell. At the same time, I've been using a Mac for 28 years (though the last two are my first laptops) so I'm firmly in the "Mac is better" camp.

Since money is not the issue, I wonder if what he figures you plan to do with it is. If you're going to use it for Facebook, Twitter, social media in general, IMHO it's a toy and not much more so one computer 10 times the price of another doesn't make sense. If the big white Apple is a status symbol, that doesn't make sense (I hope) either. But if you can come up with some meaningful purpose (and you know best what that might be to him) for a high priced computer, he might see things differently.
