New to time warner and SB6141 cable mode w/ Airport Extreme

I just subscribed to Time Warner for internet access. I have an Airport Extreme base and motorola sb6141 cable modem I purchased.

Here's the delimma in my mind:

- I used a default setup to get going on accessessing the internet, am i secure using this approach?

I am a little confused right now about what is best approach for security; setup the AE in bridge mode or just leave at the default? I used to use mac filtering when I had dsl, have not tried to do that now, so I am not.

Right now my dhcp range is 10.0.1.2 to 10.0.1.200; where did this come from?

Any input is appreciated

We can't see your computer screen, so we don't know whether you have a Mac or a PC, or what operating system it might be running.

A bit more info in that regard would eliminate a lot of guesswork.

If you have a Mac and you are not sure what operating system it is using, click the Apple icon in the upper left corner of the screen, then click on About This Mac. Post back with the OS X Version number that you see there.

Probably the most important thing to check is to make sure that the wireless network is protected by using WPA2 Personal security and a non-dictionary password of random letters and numbers.

You can review the wireless settings as follows:

Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility

Click on the AirPort Extreme icon, then click Edit in the small box that appears

Click the Wireless tab at the top of the next window

Here you can edit the name of the wireless network if you wish, check the wireless security setting....WPA2 Personal is recommended....and edit/change the wireless network password.

Since the Motorola SB6141 is a bridge mode cable modem, you would want the AirPort Extreme to be configured as a router to provide DHCP and NAT services.

You can confirm this by clicking the Network tab at the top of the screen, The setting for Router Mode should read DHCP and NAT

Click the Network Options button near the bottom of the screen to see the default settings for DHCP IP address assignments. By default, the AirPort Extreme will assign IP addresses that look like 10.0.1.x to clients that join the network either by wireless or wired Ethernet connections.

The range of 10.0.1.2 to 200 simply means that the AirPort will assign IP addresses for up to 200 devices, 50 of which can be wireless devices. There is really no reason to change this setting unless you simply want to.

You can click the other tabs at the top of the screen to poke around a bit and see other settings for the AirPort Extreme if you want.

To save any changes that you make, click the Update button at the lower right of the window and the AirPort Extreme will restart and display a green light in about 30 seconds.

Thanks very much Bob for your input,

Now I understand where the 10.0 addresses came from, I had 192.68 before with the DSL IP, but I had performed a full reset of the Airport Extreme the other night to remove any left over info from the DSL IP carrier and did not remember that the 10.0 was the default OOB setup on the AE; Duh!

I did have WP2 Personal setup for wireless and DHCP and NAT for the Router mode.

I did not realize the SB6141 just works as a bridge, thanks for explaining that.

I have now added my mac filters also and should be good to go for a secure network; at least in my mind I believe I do.

Thanks again for your input!

Dave
