I want to delete an app but there is no cross in the corner after I have held down the icon???.

This means the app is included with iOS. Apps included with iOS cannot be deleted.
what app is it? Some apps that are on the phone when you buy it such as "stocks", "newsstand", "passbook" cant be deleted.
It's just a free game - bubble blast, not something that came with the phone
Check: Settings>General>Restrictions...are yours on? Deleting Apps>On/Off.
