How can I receive text messages through car bluetooth?

I make and receive calls with my iPhone 5 through my car bluetooth stereo system. My texts messages, however, do not display. (They did with my old flip phone.) I have searched for the way to turn this feature on, but no luck. Would appreciate instructions on how to turn this feature on.

Thank you for that answer. This seems like it should have been a no-brainer. I don't like Apple Car Play (or Android Auto for that matter) and just have the phone on BT for calls and messages. On my Windows Mobile, Cortana would read the message and allow me to respond. My car will do this also if Cortana can't (which is the case for the Iphone.)

I can now finally hear when a text comes in and respond to it using my car's controls. I drive about an hour each way form home and work and get information from my beautiful young bride and kids.

I also just switched to iOS from a WinPhone, and now I can't dictate a text message handsfree. I get a lovely voice from a rather new BMW saying, "The Bluetooth device currently connected does not support this feature". I'm shocked --never even thought I'd need to research the feature. I do have Apple CarPlay, but it takes WAY more clicks and navigating to get things done compared to the iDrive. Very frustrating.

Modular747: Let me clarify. I do not text and drive. It is unsafe and aganist the law. I see that I must explain that the bluetooth capabilty allows you to make calls and receive texts, hands free. With my previous phone, when a text came through it was read to me through the speakers in the car. Phone remains in my bag; no need to touch it. This is the feature that I would like to access with my iPhone.

Both devices, the iPhone and the car need to support MAP, Message Access Profile. iPhone 4 and later are supposed to support it, however the bluetooth profile in the vehicle may need to be updated. The old phone may have accessed it differently, but this is the profile that allows for messaging. Check this support document for further information http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3647 The vehicle radio manufacturer would need to check to make sure they are compatible.

Its very simple to do on iphone 4 and 5. To turn the text feature on first connect your device via bluetooth to your car's compatible multimedia centre as you would do normally to make hands free calls. Then on your iphone go to your bluetooth settings, select the connection for your car, click the blue circle exclamation point and the select "Show Notification" by toggling it on. Very simple! Not sure why all the convoluted answers in this forum! Hope this helps!

THANK-YOU.........Been driving me and others nuts.............Your the only one with the answer. Works great. FYI ....you do not have to connect to vehicle, I just went into Bluetooth settings on iPhone and clicked the "i" icon next to Uconnect (Dodge system) under devices then toggled the "Show Notification" Thanks again...........
