You may have software or a device that needs media in aparticular format. When you change the import settings in preferences that also updates the Create a <fomat> version mechanism.

Consolidate brings in local copies of files that are stored outside of the media folder. The library is easier to backup or migrate to a new location or computer if all media is inside the media folder.
