Redirecting to api.mybrowserbar.com and Slow internet

I don't know if this related to.. but since I upgraded my imac to OS X 10.8.3 (12D78) I started having problem with slow response even for very basic functions but mostly I experienced a very slow Internet.

If I have my iPad nearby and I'm working on iMac and an email arrives, my iPad is notifying it and iMac takes few MINUTES more to do it.

I've noticed that quite often my search or browsing is redirect to api.mybrowserbar.com or error is notified "http://api.mybrowserbar.com/cgi/errors.cgi?ct=15&type=dns&ccv=158&q.

I realized something was wrong and made a search about this "api.mybrowserbar.com" and found this is considered a malware but nobody knows much about it and how to remove it especially froma MAC.

Looking for help. thx

iMac, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.3)

All discussions are talking about this malware on Windows OS.

there is nothing regarding MAC OS but I read many reports, like mine, about this malware on MAC.

My browser is Google-Chrome and I've already reset all preferences (but there was no suspicious setting) and finally I deleted chrome and downloaded a new one but it didn't help, therefore I believe it resides on the compuer now.

Antivirus doesn't recognise any on my system.

Appreciate any help/suggestion

That's exactly what I did at first. I have started Safari and I had no change/improvement.

With this malware browser/internet connection is compromised. With my iPad next to me (with the same WiFi connection) I tested a simple browsing and while iPad immediately displayed the result, Safari took over 1 minute to display an incomplete WEB page. This makes browsing inoperable.

Sorry :-)

trying to be brief I've caused misunderstanding.

I ve been using Chrome since long on both iPad and iMac. And still using it on both.

When I started having problem with beeing re-directing to api.browerbar.com on iMac (ipad still working fine with Chrome) I reset chrome/extensions and setting and at last I have killed chrome on iMac and used Safari Version 6.0.3 (8536.28.10) without any improvement.

At present I downloaded the latest Chrome and set preferences to minimum standards but condition of browser response is slow/unreliable/frozen in a word unusable

Those servers are in Indonesia. If that's not where you are, you certainly should not be using them. Even if you are in Indonesia, you may get better results from a public DNS service such as Google DNS or OpenDNS.

Please read this whole message and be sure you understand all of it before doing anything. Back up all data before making changes to your settings.

Write down the server addresses.

Click Cancel to close the Advanced sheet. Unlock the preference pane, if necessary, by clicking the lock icon in the lower left corner and entering your password. Open the DNS tab again and change the server addresses to the following:

8.8.8.8

8.8.4.4

That's Google DNS. Click OK, then Apply.

In Safari, select

Safari ▹ Preferences... Privacy Remove All Website Data

and confirm. If you’re using another browser, empty the cache. Test. Any difference?

Notes:

1. If you lose Internet access after making the above change to your network settings, delete the Google servers in the Network preference pane, then select the TCP/IP tab and click Renew DHCP Lease. That should restore the original DNS settings; otherwise restore them yourself.

2. I’m not advocating Google or anything else as a DNS provider; the server addresses are offerred merely for testing purposes. There may be privacy and technical issues involved in using that service, which you should investigate personally before you decide whether to keep the settings. Other public DNS services exist.

First of all, thx for your help, I appreciate.

Yes, Indonesia is where I am.

I did what you said to do and changed DNS Servers. Internet access is still on but so far I couldn't notice any change.

I keep on being redirected to a web address starting with api.mybrowserbar.com from my normal websites, not all the time, but very frequently, therefore I need watch over time.

Slow response is still exagerate and iPad performance is better then iMac which it shouln't be, I guess 😟

Revert your DNS settings to what they were before.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.

Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:

  • Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
  • When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
  • If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click Log in.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode.

Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

Test while in safe mode. Same problem?

After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

I've been tested my connection for many hours after reboot and I'm so happy of the results.

I'm grateful for the time you have dedicated to my problem.

As far as I can see, my internet connection has become perhaps faster than it was before ... maybe I was already accustomed to a painful response of my browser😟

I was already considering to migrate to windows that I hate🙂

Thank you
