Cannot connect MacBook Pro to Optoma Projector

Hello, I have a MacBook Pro and an Optoma HD66 projector.

I'm trying to connect my computer to the projector using a mini display port to (female) VGA and then I have a (male) VGA to (male) HDMI cable, the HDMI bit going into the projector.

The projector can't seem to detect my computer and when I click on Detect Displays in System Preferences, nothing happens.

I've read people have had problems with their Macbooks and other Optoma projectors but I can't seem to find a reason/solution to my problem.

Did anybody have a similar problem, or better yet, a solution?

I suggest you use a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter directly, rather than go from MiniDP to VGA and then to HDMI. Among other reasons, HDCP (copy-protected) content will not properly convert to VGA so the signal may be getting lost at that step.

This is what I use. Apple sells a similar adapter but it is needlessly expensive.

Audio will not work unless your MBP has a Thunderbolt port. For a projector, this is probably not a concern anyway.

I actually have Mini Display port to VGA.

So if I understand correctly you suggest converter to HDMI rather than VGA?

Yes. VGA, being an analog signal, loses all benefit of its digital source. Furthermore, if the source is encoded so as to be copy-protected (as most are) then VGA will not work at all. It scrambles the signal, and your Optoma projector will just show you a blue screen.
