My airport express 2nd edition is flashin green and amber, how do I fix this?

I accidentally put a minijack ith phnatom power into the airplay-out on my airport express, and after that I cant find it when I search for wireless networks, and it flashes three short amber light, then three longer green lights in loop.

I have tried to reset it with software and I have tried to factory reset it, but nothing seems to work.

Have anyone got an idea of how to fix it? Or should I just get a new one?

If I understand you correctly you applied a power source to the Express's analog output, which is an unkind thing to do. Considering three dots, three dashes, three dots is Morse code for SOS I think you may have stumbled upon an undocumented but interesting communication feature.

I am unwilling to test this theory myself, sorry.

A factory reset is about all you can do.

The multicolored, flashing light may make for a nice Christmas tree decoration.

I know it is ukind to apply power to the audio output, but I was in a hurry, and didn´t remember that my mixing console only had one universal phantom power.

I have also considered it to be a sos signal, and am worried that the best thing might just be to get a new one. Anyway I will absolutly in all future remember universal phantom power.

For your sake, I´m glad you´re not willing to try it out yourself, it´s not worth it 😁

I think factory reset is done by pressing the reset button and holding it while turning it on, isn´t that right? Or is there any other way to reset it even harder?

That is correct - a factory default reset, to use Apple's terminology. However, the only difference between it an a "hard reset" is that it also erases stored profiles. To eliminate all doubt a factory default reset is fine, though it requires three hands.

On rare occasions, I have heard that multiple "hard reset" attempts have restored a previously unresponsive Express, so try it.

Am I correct in assuming that "universal phantom power" is what I wrote? I am unfamiliar with that terminology - what device are you describing? It seems to me that using an exposed plug used to intentionally carry power is bad design. Usually power supply connectors are recessed or otherwise protected from unintentional contact with other devices.

A universal phantom power is the default for most audio mixers below at least $2500 if not more. It is a button that makes the mixer send +48v to the mics. Som mics need power to work. More expensive mixers have individual phantom power on each channel,

Normally I use cables wich needs plugs that cuts the power, but this time it was a cable with the right connections, so I didn´t need extra plugs, and so I sent +48v to the airport....

Woke up this morning and this three green "dashes" and three amber "dots" is what my airport express 2nd gen is doing. Wasn't broadcasting wifi.

So far hooked up over ethernet to my laptop and it passes through internet from the modem.

Tried:

Soft reset

Hard reset

Factory Default reset

All of it goes back to the 3 green dashes and 3 amber (yellow) dots. I unlike the original poster didn't apply power to the analog jack.

I will try multiple Factory Default resets and see if this helps.

Also used airport utility 5.6.1 for Windows 7 before the hard/factory resets and it wouldn't accept my well documented router password. Factory reset and now it won't connect.

Get:

An error occurred while trying to access the Apple wireless device. Make sure your network connection is valid and try again.

Error -6742

Only option is "ok" and this happens no mater what you click on for the Airport Express. Funny thing is I bought this one year and three weeks ago. Ha.

Going to try some more hard resets to see if that works. Tried to be detailed and write the text in different ways since I was unable to find this search first even though this is my exact problem 🙂 I'll try and check back later.

I've tried both Factory and Hard resets each more tha 5 times and also tried unplugging for more than 5 minutes to do a cold start. No progress, must be some type of component failure. I'm hoping to take the unit to an Apple store to see if they can fix it.

If you're interested in the "How to restart an Airport express" go here: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3728

The last bullet point walks you through the reset.

Here I posted a youtube video to show the pattern: http://youtu.be/ZYkMKBVe6L8

And here is a screen shot of the error message through Airport Utility.

Made an appointment at the Genius Bar, said it reminded them of S.O.S. and within a few minutes replaced my Airport Express under warranty. They didn't have this pattern in their manual either. Would have been $84 for a replacement otherwise. I have a Platinum credit card that doubles a year manufacturer warranty which comes in handy after the first year. Just an FYI for anyone.

The Apple Store is 2.5 hour drive away, so my wife and I went to the Zoo there first and scheduled the appointment for after. Everything worked out excellent.

My airport express 2nd edition is flashin green and amber, how do I fix this?
