My wife also has an iPad 1. Her sleep/wake button is broke. I downloaded sb settings so she could shutdown to charge. She has to plug in to wake. Can I redirect the sleep/wake command to another button?

Do you mean the home button?
You can look at Settings>General>Accessibility>Assistive Touch and see if there are any options there. However, tapping on the Home button should also wake the device.
The power button on the side is broken. Sb settings let's me turn the device off. Have to plug it in to start. Want to use a different button to start up or power up.
Just don't turn it off. Unless you're getting on an airplane, there aren't many times you'd need to do that.
Her iPad will not charge when it's on. Must power off with sb settings.
Are you charging it from the wall outlet? Or from a computer? It shouldn't need to be powered off to charge from a wall outlet.
However, it appears that you have jailbroken the device. This can cause problems with the functioning of the device. There's really not much we can do to help you with a jailbroken device other than to suggest you restore it to its original factory state.

It looks like there is nothing I can do to help. I guess I'll just power off at night to charge and let it sleep all day when we're not using it. Thanks for all of the ideas, I will keep looking for another idea and update this if I find an answer.
