updating OS X 10.2.9??

I am running OS X 10.2.9 (yes a little old I know), and I am trying to update it to 10.3.9 so that some of the newer software will work (like quicktime 7), and it says I have to be running 10.3 to run the updater, so how do I upgrade to 10.3 I couldnt find a download for the software updater?
is it something I have to pay for, do I have to buy a whole new OS?

G3 Desktop, Mac OS X (10.2.x)

Hi droehrig832,

first of all: WELCOME TO THE DISCUSSIONS!

Every major version of MacOS X (10.1, 10.2, 10.3 and 10.4) is commercial software. You have to buy it. Only the minor updates are free (e.g. from 10.4.x to 10.4.6).

Make sure you buy the retail full install disks! Then follow this procedure:
10.3 Panther Upgrade: Decision tree+checklist or
10.4 Tiger Upgrade: Decision tree+Checklist

droehrig:

Welcome to Apple Discussions.

You are likely currently running 10.2.8 as that is the last update of Jaguar.

Panther (10.3x) is an upgrade not an update. The means you need to buy new disks. Make sure you buy a Full Retail Version or universal installer version such as you get at applerescue. Computer specific versions and update versions will not work for you.

Good luck.

Hi heller42, and welcome to the discussions.

If you can't get past the system diagnostics, there may be a hardware limitation preventing the install. Tiger needs a minimum of 256MB RAM, 3 GB of hard drive space, and built-in firewire (among other requirements, but these are the three that leap to mind in your case). If you have enough RAM but it isn't original RAM, then Tiger may not be recognizing all of it (Tiger's specs for RAM are higher/tighter than Panther's, which was higher than Jaguar's).

If this doesn't get you started on a solution, open a new post for our undivided attention.
