My imessages work, but I sometimes receive text messages back?

I know that the people that I am talking to have iphones and I do not understand why I can send imessages to them, but receive their responses in text message form. I have also learned that their responses are not sending to me.

My imessages was not working previously several days ago, but has since been activated and should be working properly...
