Mac Mail spinning wheel every couple minutes (Mtn Lion)

Hello, recently when I work in Mac Mail, every couple minutes or so the multi-colored spinning wheel appears for 20-30 seconds. Needless to say, it takes a long time to get stuff done right now. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Steve, any solutions so far? This very same problem just occured a couple of days ago and it's slightly (...) annoying. I tried rebuilding the mailbox, also re-indexing all mails by deleting those files in the library, which usually helped. But not this time...

I have plenty of RAM and 10GB free space on my drive.

Does that advice of repairing the HD permissions in the linked thread help and does it also apply for SSD?

Thanks.

Hi Steve, thanks for your reply. I just deleted my gmail acount, but - guess what - no change at all... All my other accounts are barely used, so I thought it might be the largest one causing problems. And for some reason the mail app still looks up mail servers of a previously deleted acount. ****...
Cheers,

Patrick
