My iPhone5 has today sent 5 random text messages of one or two words to contacts on my phone. It has also called one of the contacts twice.
Could you advise what the issue is and how I can address it ?

If your phone was in your pocket and screen was unlocked I wouldn't be entirely suprised. Where was the phone when this happened? If it was just sitting on your desk when it became possessed I would go get that phone replaced as there is something seriously wrong with it.
It was on my desk for most of the time, but it's always locked when in my pocket.
I would go get a replacement phone - it's covered under warranty. Back up your phone first before swapping it out.
Start by resetting your phone: press and hold the power button and the Home button until you see the silver apple appear. This will not delete any data.
Thanks, I tried to reset option a couple of times with no success, so looks as though it's going to need a replacement as suggested by pdroth.
No, the next step is to retore the phone using iTunes. You might as well do it yourself before you take it in as that's the first thing the Geniuses will do. Restore it as new.
