    HI,

The most common cause for this after OS X 10.8.2  (you have posted in OS X 10.7.x) is having the Serial Number missing from the logic board.

Go to the Apple Icon Menu top left and then use "About this Mac".

In this new panel click twice on the line that currently tread the OS X version number

The first will show you the build number for the software  (just another way Apple counts which version it is).

The second click will show you the Serial Number.

If it is missing you will need to visit an Apple Store or an Apple Authorised Service Provider (AASP) to have it restored.

It is supposed to be "flashed" to the Logic/Motherboard if the board is replaced during a  repair or refurbishment.

If that does not appear to be the issue then do the following:-

In the Finder > GO Menu > Go to Folder and type etc/hosts into the dialogue box that appears.

This will take you to a hidden folder and the hosts file within it will be highlighted.

Do an Open With and chose TextEdit to read the file.

It should look like this in it's original form

    Hosts file.png

You will need to edit the file if it lists Apple or Verisign as this file can stop connections to those servers.

You are only using TextEdit to view the file.

If you need to edit it then you will need to use Terminal

You will also need to be logged in to the computer using an Admin Account that has  passowrd that is not blank.

    Open Terminal.

Type (Copy and past the bold text) sudo pico /etc/hosts into Terminal and hit enter/return.

It will ask now you for your Password for the Mac User Account

Enter this (you will not see it but it should then display the contents of the file)

Use the Arrow keys to move up and down the lines (it should highlight the first character of each line)

Type  the # symbol on the lines that need it  (this is normally Shift + 3 or Alt + 3 on US or British Keyboards)

Typing this inserts it in front of the highlighted Character.

This is called "Commentating out"  (the line is then ignored when the system reads the file)

You now Save the file by using CTRL + o

This editor in Terminal will show you the file to be Saved and the place it will be saved written above the hints.

    Hit the enter key again.

    The file is Saved.

    Quit Terminal.
