    The filesystem which OS X uses (HFS+) is designed to avoid defragment, so you don't have to worry about that. However, if you install Windows with Boot Camp, you should defragment the Windows partition because it will be fragmented

    As mendel has explained the filesystem OS X uses is designed to avoid fragmentation, but it can happen. I have only ran in to an issue when trying to partition the HDD for Bootcamp and the way I resolved this was by booting to recovery and repairing the disk.
