Apps store trouble

I recently purchased a Mac Airbook off of eBay a few weeks ago. I am having trouble signing into the App Store on the computer. I do have an iTunes account that I use for my other Apple devices. But when I try to sign into the App Store using my current username and Apple I'd I receive the error message "an unknown error has occurred". No one seems to know how to correct this.
