Swipe to move to the left of the Multitasking Bar, so you can see the set of controls just to the left of the volume adjustment slider.
The button just to the right of the Fast Forward button – the one that has a rectangle with a solid, upward-facing arrow in it – is the AirPlay button. Tap to switch from iPad to Apple TV.
Once you do that you’ll see the Mirroring section appear just below the entry for Apple TV. Just tap to turn that On, and the iPad 2 will immediately begin mirroring to your TV screen.
To turn AirPlay Mirroring off, just double-tap the home button again, tap the AirPlay button, and toggle Mirroring to off.

Apr 28, 2013 1:00 PM in response to clay58by hawkeyee,Clay! that sounds great but I have the latest update 6.1.3 . I can get the airpay icon but it only shows the ipad and my yamaha reciever HTR-4065 which has apple airplay built in. I can airplay music from my ipad to my seroundsound speakers and the song name shows up on the tv. The airplay icon shows at the top right of the page after I tap the music icon. The airplay icon doesn't show the mirror or anything else. do you have any ideas as to what is wrong.

Jul 25, 2013 6:25 PM in response to Madg4by vandactor,I have the same problem, we have several ipad 2 at school all of them that have iOS 6 lost the ability to mirror to the Apple TVs in the class rooms. Ones with iOS 5 work great, and the ipad 3's work great also. It appears something was broken in iOS 6 for the ipad 2. Note that native apps like photos can project to the Apple TV but the mirroring option is gone. I've seen this in iOS 6.1.0 and in iOS 6.1.3
