Lion MBP Crashes Every Hour – Help Save an Aging Mac?

Hello. I could do with some advice!

The Issue

Almost exactly an hour after starting up (as far as I can tell), apps become unresponsive, and the beachball appears. I can usually still move the mouse, but iTunes playback ceases and nothing else works. It does not depend on what I am doing at the time. The only way out is to force a shut-down using the power key.

This has happened repeatedly for the last two days. For the most recent crash, I had activity monitor open in the background so I could see what was going on – it stopped working 8-9 seconds before I could no longer send iChat messages.

Spec

My MBP is a bit of a Frankenstein's Monster – it is a 15" 2008 penrhyn model (with 2.4 GHz dual core). It originally came with Leopard, I think, but has since been upgraded to Lion via the App Store.

I have also upgraded the following: the RAM was replaced the day I got the Mac; the original hard drive was swapped out for a 500GB model two years ago; and about one year ago I stripped out the optical drive and replaced that with a 64GB SSD, which is now my boot drive. Another thing to note is that my battery ballooned recently so I have been using it without a battery installed (this has not been a problem).

My Progress

Here's a summary of what I've done so far and the results I've had:

Restarting: Obviously no dice.

Resetting the PRAM: No luck.

Hardware Test Mode: AHT was not installed with Lion, but I downloaded the SL copy posted in this thread. It ran (slowly) two or three times, but each time got stuck when testing the logic board (again, forcing me to do a hard shut-down).

Deleting new software: I uninstalled any software that I had picked up in the last week.

OnyX: I ran various cache cleaners using the OnyX app.

Safe Mode: I ran the system in safe mode, using it as normal. After an hour it crashed again.

So no luck so far – I can't tell if it's a hardware or software problem. I would love it to be a software problem because I would like it if my MBP lasted a little while longer. If anyone has any suggestions as to what else to try, they would be welcome.

I would happily post a log if needed, but I'm not sure where to find one (it doesn't come up with a crash report when the Mac comes back on).

As an little update, I've tried some more things:

Reinstalling Lion from the Recovery Disk: Tried overnight, then this afternoon as well. Both times it spent a very long time (think 6-7 hours) downloading additional files (I have very slow internet here!) before crashing at approximately 90% completion.

I made a install partition on an external drive when I downloaded Lion – the next step is trying to reinstall the system from that.

Apple hardware Test has a reputation for false negatives.

Not being able to run the diagnostic is an indication of a serious Hardware problem.

Use this article to check for kernel panic logs:

If no stored logs, use console to read out the last 20 lines stored before the restart, and cut-and-paste them here.

Hi Grant - I wonder if you can help me -

These are the last lines after a crash this morning in the system.log

Hi Rebecca,

I was able to find a solution to this problem - apologies for not posting it here earlier.

Did you install the SSD as a boot drive, like I did? The SSD was the problem for me. I discovered this by booting from a backup drive instead. I got my SSD from Crucial, and their support team were very helpful - this was a known issue for them.

First, power cycle the drive:

1. Restart the Mac. Hold the alt key to startup into the Startup Manager mode.

2. Leave the system running on the SM screen for twenty minutes.

3. Power down for thirty seconds.

4. Repeat steps 1-3.

5. Start up as normal.

This should fix the issue, but to make sure it does not recur, update the drive's firmware. The Crucial firmware site can be found here:

http://www.crucial.com/support/firmware.aspx

I wasn't able to update the firmware myself (its much easier if you haven't removed your optical drive to put in a second hard drive), but Crucial SSDs have a three-year warranty and they were more than happy to update it for me for free. It took just three days - in the meantime I put my back-up drive into my MBP and booted from that.

I hope this sorts your problem too.

Jun 10, 2013 6:18 AM in response to rebecca08

rebecca08-

Your problems appear to be caused by add-ons:

1password

dropbox

In the second report, there is also a problem with communication and assignemt of IP addresses.

You need to make absolutely certain you have the most up-to-date versions of these add-ons installed.

If you do, it may take removing them to get your system stable enough for further investigations.

Jun 13, 2013 6:11 PM in response to Mrlemonjelly

Thank you so much for posting this follow up. It was your info that made it possible for me to diagnose the problem and while Crucial couldn't help me apply the firmware update it I took it back to the guys who had built the computer for me and prepared with all my info on the issue I was able to avoid hefty computer diagnosis fees. They took out the SSD and applied the update in a computer with an optical drive then put it back in the computer and only charged me $15 🙂 Yay! Thanks again for your post.

It is also very helpful when running a non-Apple SSD to Install and enable TRIM Enabler or similar program. This allows the system to tell the SSD what blocks are being discarded and need no longer be tracked, reorganized, and garbage collected as if they were good.

If you can boot from an alternate Drive with TRIM Enabler installed and enabled and Run Disk Utility (Repair Disk ) you get an additional line of output:

"Trimming unused blocks"

That give the feeling that a whole lot of unused block have been eliminated.

-------

Despite the protestations of some vendors that "their drives do not need TRIM" it is still helpful. It also reduces wear and avoids drive failure due to clogging with deleted data.
