FCPX Crash while loading content

OK.

I'm lost. Hopefully someone can help.

Running a:

Macbook Pro.

Retina, Mid 2012

2.7 GHz Intel Core i7

16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1024 MB

OS x 10.8.3

I shot some footage with a couple of GoPros.

1080 @ 60 FPS

I have edited before with FCPX and these GoPros

with no issues.

I have all my media on an external Thunderbolt drive.

Now. When I try to load up FCPX it will instantly crash.

Or crash soon after it runs through the loading phase.

Like I can't touch anything.

After a lot of fooling around I determined that the program

seems to run fine when not connected to the external drive.

It is when it is connected to this drive that it crashes.

I have all of my projects on this drive so it is hard to tell

what exactly is causing it to go down but I suspect it has

something to do with the newest footage.

ALSO.

I was reading through the forums and it mentioned to keep

things on the 23.9 frame rate or some number like that

and I had set the file to 24 FPS.

Could this be causing it?

Any help would be grand.

Thank you much and thanks for listening.

first thing to try is deleting the application preferences,

(try using the Digital Rebellion product, http://www.digitalrebellion.com/)

Second, run Disk First Aid over your system and external drive.

(how much free space is on the external drive?)

Let us know how you go.

You likely have a corrupt event or project in that drive.

Hide your events and projects in that drive from FCP X by putting them in a different folder. You can do this manually in the Finder or more easily using Event Manager X (it costs $5).

To do it in the Finder, create folders called "Final Cut Events - Hidden" and "Final Cut Projects - Hidden", beside the regular "Final Cut Events" and "Final Cut Projects". Move your events and projects to the "hidden" folders and then start FCP X again. If it starts, you have determined that the problem is in one the events or projects.

Now quit FCP X and start the process of elimination by bringing in some of the events and projects and seeing if it crashes. In a few tests you should be able to figure out what may have become corrupt.

No, That's not causing your crashes. But if you're working in video, as opposed to film, 23.98 (23.976) is a standard frame rate and should be your choice.

Trashing preferences is a good first step.

But I think Luis is on the right track in suspecting a corrupt file…as well as his suggestion for trouble-shooting it.

Seems to be some corrupt files.

OR the gopros keep restarting the numbering with new files. (I need to switch this)

So I have a lot of files with the same names.

I got Event Manager X and love it.

Kinda stupid that this is not built into FCPx

Couple of odd side notes for anyone reading this.

My GoPros seem to be making additional files next to the Mov files that the computer

can't read. I forget the extension but I probably need to turn that off as well.

My prefrence files don't seem to be where they should be.

Like.. I can't find them on my system. I have tried the default

path as well as the finder. no dice.

BUT, My orginal issues have been solved.

Thank ya all.

The preference files are in ~/Library/Preferences (where ~ denotes your home folder).

Since Lion, this Library folder is hidden (and with good reason), but it is easy to access it: just hold the Option key and open the Go menu in the Finder to access it. If you find you need to access it often, just drag the icon in the title of the window to the sidebar and it will remain there, always accessible.

If you need to delete preferences (and mostly likely, you will eventually, since they sometimes get corrupted and cause problems), the easy and free way is to download Preference Manager. Since you liked the simplicity and effectiveness of Event Manager, you'll appreciate Preference Manager - and did I say it's free?
