Wifi works for short time

Dear readers,

Since a few weeks my wifi / airport on my Macbook stops working after a few minutes. I can temporarily fix this problem by turning off and on the Airport function, but after a few minutes it kicks me out again.

Other details:

  • Cable works fine.
  • Full wifi bars at all time.
  • Not a router issue. Other devices work fine and problem occurs both at home and on work.
  • I recently updated to Mountain Lion, problems started to occur around this time. (not 100% sure)
  • Problem still occurs after downgrade from Mountain Lion 10.8.3 to Snow Leopard 10.6.8.

Examples: (I have the feeling that has something to do with bandwidth usage)

  • Browsing the web is possible for about 5 minutes.
  • Youtube video stops loading after 2 minutes.
  • Any kind of download works for 30 seconds.

What I tried:

  • Simple reboot
  • Software downgrade
  • Creating a new network location
  • Manual IP
  • Change DNS server
  • Change MTU
  • Some reset by pressing cmd/ctrl/shift/power during startup

I know that i'm not the only one who is having this problem. But i really hope that this (extra) post will get some attention from Apple.

Thank you for your help.

Try the basics first:

Change your router channel number. Most times this works & is all you have to do.

Disconnect & reconnect your modem. unplug it for about 10 seconds. Plug it back in. Do the same for Apple’s routers. Wait for everything to reboot.

System Preferences>Network

Click the Assist Me button.

In the next window that pops up, click the Diagnostic button & do the necessary.

Research Knowledge Base for network problems that pertain to the OS that is currently installed on your computer. See these basic networking KB Articles: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1401 AirPort troubleshooting guide

Also, run the Airport Utility app which is located inside the Utilities folder.

If using Apple's Airport, please re-post over in one of the AirPort Forums.

Hi Baby Boomer,

Thank you for your answer and trying to help me.

Like I said before, it is not a router issue. I've the same problem on every network, and reconnecting my modem doesn't solve the problem either. There a hounderds of people having a similar problem.
