No CD/DVD Drive in new Mac Book Pro Retina?

I was thinking of getting the MBP Retina.

But I was disappointed when I found out that it does not have a CD/DVD drive. 😠

Does anyone know why this is?

Is Apple discontinuing the CD/DVD drive in all their new products? Will DVDs/CDs eventually become obsolete or something?

Or am I missing something here? 😕

The MacBook Pro with Retina display doesn't come with a SuperDrive because it doesn't fit and Apple wanted to make a thin, light Mac. Apart from that, Apple is discontinuing the SuperDrive in all their computers, starting with the MacBook Air and ending in the iMac. Now, the only Macs which comes with a SuperDrive are the MacBook Pro and the Mac Pro, but we don't know if Apple will discontinue the SuperDrive in these computers.

If you want to use a DVD drive with a MacBook Pro with Retina display, you have to get an external optical drive or, if you have another Mac or PC, use Remote Disc > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5287?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

Unfortunately our Powers To Be believe that with easy to access high speed internet and substantial download limits, everything is gearing up for Internet download and streaming in the future. External Drives are looked upon as the prefered storage media over CDs/DVDs. Also playing music CDs have been replaced (for some) through media player streaming, USB/iPod/iPhone compatability in cars etc. Shame for my old belovered 6 CD Stacker in my car. But at the same time, an external Mac DVD/CD drive/burner is only about $100.

I am not altogether comfortable yet with this change, but it seems to be the way both Apple and Microsoft are heading.

Hope this helps

Pete
