How do I stream video to Apple Tv and use computer at the same time?

I want to use my mac while i stream video files to my apple tv. I know you can use iTunes but I'm watching multiple seasons of tv shows and i don't want to have to convert all the files to work with iTunes? I use VLC to play my shows.

MacBook Pro (17-inch Late 2011), Mac OS X (10.7.2)

You can't, unless it would work using Airplay from one users account while working in another.

Never tried as no mirroring compatible Macs.

just a bit fustrated that iTunes can do it but VLC cant, it can only stream audio with airplay, i heard of some other apps that work together to do it but i couldnt work it out.
