Have been to system and user libraries. Cannot find backup location. Newest iTunes is useless to me. Does the Apple GodStore understand not to mess up a careful store of documents?

are you wanting to set up mobile sync or are you just trying to find synced files?
Would using the View menu in iTunes 11 to View Sidebar help?

Accessing the files in the mobile sync folder will be useless to you unless you download some software that can read the files, if you are hoping to find documents in the backup.
Thanks. Am trying to find the backup files. Assume new files will be entered by drag & drop into the directory in iTunes. A path to an apparent hidden folder can be found using my username. But to find what is actually backed up is still unknown because of the coded filenames. Viewing the sidebar or toolbar is worthless as no PDFs or my created iBooks are accessible. Apparently Apple thinks we users out here in the weeds have faith in hidden directories. But I have 299 teaching files on my iPad that I cannot afford to lose. The sync button at the bottom of the "books" page produces the sync bar action but no files come up in the dialogs.
Uh oh! I understand and am even more annoyed at Apple.
Tried that and no dice. According to others, need more software to check out those files I did find. "Upgrading" is a relative term used by Apple. Things were perfect until I updated my iPad.
A backup is only really of use for restoring back onto an iOS device, it's not there for you to extract content from it.
Sync only copies content to your iPad, not off it. If you want to copy those files off the iPad then what app are they in ? If they are in the iBooks app then even if they aren't iTunes purchases then you should be able to copy them over to the Books section of your Mac's iTunes via File > Devices > Transfer Purchases
Thanks for your time! Sidebar only works for Store stuff and I never buy movies or music. Make my own eBooks and movies.

If they are in the iBooks app then Transfer Purchases should still copy them off the iPad
