How do I disable USB port or release device from USB controller in order to use device in virtual machine?

I am running virtualbox inside OSX and I need to either release the device or disable the port on the host(OSX) in order to use it the guest machine(xp).

Is there a way to do this?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.5)

Launch disk utility and click on the device then click the eject button, you may need unplug the device then plug it back in for Virtualbox to pick it up.
