Q: wifi problems

Hey,

My Macbook Pro 13' (2.3 Ghz Intel Core i5, 4GB) is constantly losing wireless connection... which is quit annoying. I am using Lion version 10.7.5. At first I thought the problem was the router, but turns out it happens with several different routers and ISPs. Whenever the connection is gone, I use the assistant. Wifi, Wifi definitions and Network definitions all appear in green but ISP always appears in red. After the diagnosis is finished usually a message is displayed saying that everything looks fine. And indeed connection has been established... for another 5 minutes...

This probably did not happen before I upgraded to Lion and I started noticing it several months after the upgrade.

Can anybody help please?

Cheers.

    Try the basics first:

Change your router channel number.  Most times this works & is all you have to do.

Disconnect & reconnect your modem.  unplug it for about 10 seconds.  Plug it back in.  Do the same for Apple’s routers.  Wait for everything to reboot.

    System Preferences>Network

    Click the Assist Me button.

In the next window that pops up, click the Diagnostic button & do the necessary.

Research Knowledge Base for network problems that pertain to the OS that is currently installed on your computer.   See these basic networking KB Articles:  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1401 AirPort troubleshooting guide

Thank you for your reply, Baby Boomer.

I just changed the channel randomly from 13 to 8 (Europe) to see if it helps. I don't think that's the problem though, I have other devices connected and those work fine (except for the fact that the connection isn't that good and sometimes there are problems, which are occasional).

I have been rebooting my router on a regular basis and the connection is sometimes reestablished, however what usually works best is the diagnosis tool (that you also mention). Usually, it doesn't take long until I lose connection again after running the diagnosis.

I am using is a thomson technicolor TD5130.

I also tried to find a solution online before posting this, but I couldn't find anything that helped.

Update: the change of channel did not help. I already lost my connection twice after posting the above.

You really need to try more than one channel change as you may well have moved to a channel that is no better or even worse than the original.

When selecting a channel, most people seem to go for the least congested, this is not always the best option as there are many other signals other than wi-fi sharing the allocation. All you can do is try a few channels and see if any are signifincantly better.

    Thank you G4PYR,

I will try a few. I can see there are lots of networks in my buiding. I assumed that it wasn't the (only) problem because I experienced the same issue elsewhere.

I will give it a few more tries and let you know how it goes.

    Thank you.

Where possible all my kit here uses 5GHz as there is too much activity on 2.4GHz where I can see at the moment almost 40 networks. On 5GHz all I can see is a neighbour and myself and the speed is far better.

Certainly in my immediate area there is so much stuff on 2.4GHz that it's next to useless for a decent speed. In my office alone I have a wireless keyboard, 3 wireless mice, a bluetooth mouse and a bluetooth keyboard, two smartphones plus two laptops all on the band. Two neighbours either way also have networks on 2.4GHZ. On 5GHz I have two iPads and this Macbookpro and that's it.

    Thank for your help, G4YR.

Unfortunately, I can't seem to fix the problem.

Also I noticed that when using different devices, only the Macbook Pro seems to lose the connection.

    Any further thoughts, anyone?

    Cheers.

If you have AppleCare, give them a call.  Let them deal with this.

If you wish, I can request that a HOST transfer this whole thread over to the Lion forums.  Perhaps users there who are using the same OS system as yourself can offer new clues as well as suggestion.

Thanks a lot for your offer. Yes, I think the Lion forum might help. Can we transfer it?  I don't have apple care.

I put through the request to have this whole thread relocated to the Lion forums.
