Aperture will not open

Try opening Aperture while holding down the option key this will bring up the library choice window. Seelec the Create New button.

Can you make a new library and have Aperture start on it?

Your screenshot of the opening panel appears to be cropped. Is the bottom line with the buttons missing? The panel should look like this:

• If there is a "Create New" button press it and try with a new, empty library. If Aperture works with a new library post back.
• If the "Create New" button should be missing, remove your Aperture preference from the user library.

. I also removed the com.apple.aperturescript.plist.

~Library/Containers/com.apple.Aperture/Data/Library/Caches/com.apple.Aperture/

Quit Aperture and log off and on again before removing any of the library items.

Missing GUI items can be caused by broken preferences and caches.

I noticed that Aperture is constantly "processing," Leonie. Is this normal? Cheers, jp

The newest Aperture version will upgrade the Aperture library to a new format, and this processing will need some time. It is hard to predict, how long it will take, since this will depend on the size of the library.

If it is processing in between over and over again, this could mean, that Aperture is creating previews. Do you see a filename in the Activity viewer? Is Aperture processing the image over and over again?

Yes, better post this in a new thread, but add a link to this thread, so you need not to explain all of the history of your library. with a new thread, more of our frequent posters may look in and come up with ideas.

An obvious thing to try with missing referenced original files is to try to reconnect them.

• Create a smart album with all your images with missing originals: In the "Smart Settings HUD" add a smart rule "File Status is missing".
• Then select all images in the album and use the command "File > Locate referenced Files".

How to do that is explained on this page of the Aperture User Manual:

After reconnecting rebuild the thumbnails for the reconnected images.

Does it tell you, they are not offline or they are not referenced?

Where are those particular original image files located? On your external drive or managed in the Aperture Library? If external drive, how is this drive formatted?

Ooops! Sorry Leonie, I lied to you - the pop-up says "No Referenced Files - The selection doesn't have any referenced files."

That is what I suspected - sometimes Aperture has a weird glitch, that images show as offline, but are not referenced fies. This may happen, when you move your Aperture library between drives, for example, when there are permission problems.

Or when the drive, that you moved the library to, does not support the filename scheme that is required. Is your old drive - "CCC 5000 GB COmputer backup" formatted MacOS X Extended (Journaled)? If not, then the long version names after importing from Flickr and Facebook may not work on that drive and Aperture may not be able to find the original files.

First check the filesystem on the drive: Select the drive in the Finder and use the command "File > Get Info". What format do you see in the "General" brick?

If it is not MacOS X Extended, you need to format the drive, before you store Aperture Libraries or referenced originals there.

Then I'd try to repair the Aperture Library with the First Aid Tools". Use all three options, beginning with "Repair Permissions", see this section in the manual:

This will probably not suffice to reconnect the missing originals, but at least ensure that the library files are correct.
