Hardware Error: 4mem/60/4000000: 0xb6ce5798

Hello there,

I have a 27" mid 2010 iMac.

The graphics have been flickering lately and Apple have advised me to book it in for repair.

I contacted my local Authorised Repair Centre and they advised me to run a hardware test first to check for anything.

The mac has come back with:

4mem/60/4000000: 0xb6ce5798

This was within the first 10 mins.

Also the iMac is extreemly hot at the rear where the vents are. I don't know if this is normal when running a hardware test?

Any help would be really good!User uploaded file

P.S I have no idea why my image is showing upside down as on my system is is the correct way up, but when I upload it to here, it seems to be switching it around.

Mac mini, Mac OS X (10.7.3)

That's a problem with the memory. I recommend you to run Apple Hardware Test again and make sure you run an extended test. If the same error shows up, you should take your computer to an Apple Store or reseller again to be repaired. As the problem could be caused during the repair of your computer, the repair may be free

Hi there,

Thanks for both of your comments.

New ram was added to the system when it was purchased well over a year and a half ago. But no problems with graphics were experienced back then.

The hardware test I ran was already in extended mode and that is what came back.

I am assuming that if some of the ram has gone faulty this would not have caused my screen to flicker every now and then, potentially meaning I have two problems?

Thanks for your posts.

I believe the iMac has all 4 slots filled.

It has 16gb of ram so it must have 4gb chips in each slot.

I will give the software you suggested a go.

If I take the ram out, do you suggest I then re-runt he hardware test to see if the fault flags up again, and continue this each time trying to take out a different chip?

Also, is the iMac supposed to get so hot when hardware testing? The back was too hot to touch, the fan was going ten to the dozen.

I believe you need ram in pairs in order to run. Start by running Rember and see what it says, I don't remember but it may tell you which bank(s) are having errors. If it just reports an error take out two sticks and run it again,if it fails again take out those two and reinstall the first two and run it again. It'll be a process but if it IS a ram fault you should eventually be able to isolate it to a specific stick or set of sticks. If you find that one or two are failing try running with 8gb for awhile to see if your problem has indeed disappeared. Do you still have the original Apple installed ram?
