Lost Playlists with upgrade

I recently upgraded to newest version of itunes. Now I can't see my 14 playlists on Itunes that show up currently on my Ipod classic. If I sync, will the playlists go back to the itunes on my computer? Thanks for the help.

Thanks, TT2. I did try following your posted instructions yesterday, but I think my Itunes folders are messed up. I recently took my desktop in for repairs and they deleted Itunes. When I went to Apple site and downloaded Itunes, all of my 6006 songs show up, but only one of my 14 playlists. When I tried to go to find the itunes previous library folder, I think I have an Itunes folder under owner documents and one under my name. On my Ipod Classic, I show 6006 songs and my 14 playlists. If I sync, will my 14 playlists show back up on my PC or not.

Thanks so much

Syncing will remove the playlists from the device and make it match the iTunes library that you see. Search the computer for files of the form *.itl to see what library files are available. Note to view an alternate database you either need to copy & rename files (as shown in the earlier link) to replace the active library file or press & hold down shift as you start iTunes and wait until prompted to create or choose a library.

I did a search for .itl files and found 13 of them. Here are some of the most recent:

Name of file: iTunes Library located in:

C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\My Documents\My Music\iTunes

size is 1766 KB and last modified on 4/17/13

-----------------

Name of file: iTunes Library 2013-04-08 located in:

C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\Previous iTunes Libraries

size is 4KB and last modified on 4/8/13

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Name of file: i Tunes Library located in:

C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Desktop\My Music\My Music\iTunes

size is 2151KB and last modified on 1/20/2013

---------------------------------------------------------

Name of file: iTunes Library 2013-01-02 located in:

C:\Documents and Settings/Owner\Desktop\My Music\My Music\i Tunes\Previous iTunes Libraries

size is 1664 KB and last modified on 1/2/2013

-------------------------------

Then I have others from 2012 and back to 2009.

How do I know which is the correct file and what file I am going to make corrupt?

Thanks

This would seem to be the most recently modified file, and therefore the active library. This is the one you rename as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl - the name itself isn't important, just that you change it.

This would seem to be the largest, most recent, alternative file, and therefore most likely to be your proper library. Copy it to C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Library.itl

Start iTunes, add the media folder to the library to add in recent imports, back up.

Sorry to be a pain, but I'm not quite sure how to do this. I did rename the one file to (corrupt). I can't seem to rename the 2151 KB file so it follows all the right paths. I renamed it like you told me, but I think I just changed the file name and don't know how to rename it with all the right paths, i.e., C:\Documents and settings\Owner\My Documents\My Music\I Tunes\iTunes Library.itl. Thanks again

When I now open iTunes, it shows that I am on Version 11.02.06. The screen looks like it used to before I downloaded the latest version in April. When I update, am I going to lose my playlists again?

Also, where is the best place for me to back up my iTunes? Most of my music is from my own CD's--not purchased on the iTunes store. If I back up my music to an external drive, will that do?

Thanks so much.

Oh.Oh. Here I am again. I thought everything was okay. All my songs and playlists are back. But most of the songs have an exclamation point next to them. When I try to play them, it tells me that it can't play because the original file can't be found and then asks if I would like to try to locate it.

Requesting your help once again.

Thanks

Apologies, I may have missed something....

Is your original media in:

C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Desktop\My Music\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Media

and not in:

C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Media ?

If so you need to move the folder iTunes Media from:

C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Desktop\My Music\My Music\iTunes

to:

C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\My Documents\My Music\iTunes

If there is already an iTunes Media folder in the target location it may be best to rename this as Not iTunes Media first, then once your library is working you can see if there is anything unique inside that media that needs to be added to your library by moving it to:C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Media\Automatically Add to iTunes.

I don't think it's in either one.

This location: C:\Docs & Settings\Owner\Desktop\My Music\My Music\iTunes Media contains 4 folder:

Folder: Automatically Add to ITunes (which is empty)

Folder: Downloads (which is empty)

Folder: iPod Games (which has a couple of games in it)

Folder: Music (which has lots of album icons in it)

and an icon for iTunes preferences.

I can locate my file in: C:\Docs & Settings\Owner\Desktop\My Music\My Music\iTunes

Folder: Album Artwork

Folder: Previous iTunes Libraries (which is where I see my 2151KB file that I want)

Folder: iTunes Media (contains the four folders as explained above)

Plus several .itl files

iTunes Library database file

iTunes Library extras

iTunes Library Genius

iTunes Music XLM Document file

Sentinel file

Somehow I think I've gotten things screwed up a bit. I Hope I explained what I have so you can understand.

Thanks
