'm currently trying to update my laptops software from 10.5.8 and I have no idea which software update I should buy :/

Your Mac has been updated as far it can be.
To go any further you must upgrade to a new version of OS X.
To do that you must purchase from Apple the Snow Leopard install DVD. When you install that your Mac will be running 10.8. That can be upgraded to 10.6.8

If I buy the Snow Leopard can I just download it from the Apple website or do I have to wait for the Software to arrive?
Snow Leopard is only available in DVD form. There is no downloadable version.
