does not recognize devices

I have same problem with all devices I connect. (shuffle, brand new ipod classic etc) It says I have to do a restore. The music library or contents of device do not show. The option to Eject does not show.If I switch to main music library, it disappears from devices sidebar but will show up when computer is restarted.
