Upgrade to Mountain Lion = Empty Playlists

Yesterday I upgraded from 10.5.8 to 10.8.3. Thought everything went OK until I just went in to fire up one of the many playlists that I had created in iTunes, only to find all of them empty. The list of playlists is still there, and when you click on a playlist, it tells you the number of songs and how long the playlist is, but the songs don't appear.

I've seen similar posts in other forums on here, and a few suggestions have been offered but I haven't seen any clear solution to this rather massive issue.

I've seen a lot of suggestions as to what the cause might be or what might or might not resolve this issue, but has anyone identified a repeatable solution to this problem?

The repeatable solution was to have first made a backup before stumbling into the forest. Don't put the blame on Apple. Millions of users have done this without any problems.

First, I did do a backup. This does not explain the situation I'm experiencing, where the playlists exist but the songs attached to them do not.

Secondly, I'm not the only user affected by this bug, as a slew of other postings indicates.

I guess it's just easier to assume I didn't though, instead of simply asking me.

Then restore the playlists from your backup or restore the iTunes folder that contains your original library.

And, yes, I have to assume since you didn't provide sufficient information nor even mention if you had attempted to restore anything from the backup. I also never suggested you were the only person with this or a similar problem.

By running the latest update of iTunes, the contents of all of my playlists re-appeared. This solved the problem and relieved me of spending time restoring them from my backup.

Great to have full access to those playlists again.
