Q: playlist by least recently played ALBUM

I'd like to make a classical music playlist that would basically be 50 least recently played albums, so I can shuffle by album and not hear only the first and last movements of a symphony, but not run out of room on the iPhone where I do a lot of my listening.  I'm probably just having a mental block on how to create this list--I'm sure it will take at least two lists, but not sure whether it is possible at all, or which sorts to use for the pre-list and the main list.

Any suggestions?

Spoke to Apple support tonight and they had no suggestions aside from manually linking tracks together in soemthing like Garage Band (for several hundred albums?  no thanks!  and sometimes it's nice to listen to random tracks).  So it's an enhancement request.  If you have this wish too, please go to apple.com/feedback and request it.  If we get enough requests, maybe those of us who don't always want to listen song by song like top 40 radio can get some features for us!

Anyone know if there are improvements in latest iTunes (11.1.2 is what it offers me now) to permit sorting playlists by ALBUM?

Bit of a grave dig, but the issue's the same: I'd like to make a playlist sorted by when the whole album was most recently played. Heck, even shuffling by album would be nice - especially valuable for classical music.

I don't know if a solution exists … but if it does, it will likely be in an AppleScript utility to be found at dougscripts.com . I don't recall seeing anything like this, but on the other hand I've never specifically looked. It does sound like a nice option for interacting with your music library.

If somebody finds a solution, please post it here so others can stumble upon it.

There doesn't seem to be a good solution - I've dug around in dougscripts and I can find things like "Random Album", but nothing quite what I'm after.

My current solution is kind of lame: I've made a dumb playlist of things that I consider "albums" (so mostly non-pop). And in iTunes I'll scroll down through that and see which ones haven't been played through in a long while. Then I'll play the album through, and then I'll remove it from that playlist. So in theory over the next four or five years I should get through that playlist!

Unfortunately this is method doesn't really help when I'm playing through Apple TV / Home Sharing, or through my iPhone.

    Donot Haveone,

The iTunes Smart playlist logic that excludes or includes items is all by track, not by album.  It does not recognize a concept like "least recently played album."
