Q: iCloud ID already taken

I got a replacement i-Pad for a faulty one but now iCloud won't work with notes and mail; I can't save to iCloud. What do I need to do?

When I switch it on under Settings, it responds that "the id is already taken", (I believe by me, but it doesn't allow me to proceed).

It sounds like when you are in Settings, somehow you have answered questions that lead the iPad to create a new Apple ID.  Instead, early in the process, you should indicate that you have an existing Apple ID that you would like to use.
