Add your PDF file into your iTunes library as a book. You should be able to do this without changing the format.
The next time you synchronise your computer with your iPad the book will be synced along with everything else.
Get a .pdf reader (Adobe Reader, PDF Reader,......) on iTunes.
After installing the App, go to Apps in iTunes on your iPad and chose the Share option in your applications list.
Click on your .pdf reader App on the left, then on ADD , and chose the .pdf file you want to add to the chosen application.
Good luck !
