I am taking my ipad with verizon to UK for 3 weeks do I have to unlock something first in order to connect to internet over there

No, just pop in a SIM card for your carrier in the UK.

It depends on which model of iPad you have. If you have an iPad 2, it can only be used with Verizon or one of their few international roaming partners. If you have an 3rd or 4th generation iPad, you should be able to use it with any compatible GSM carrier in the UK, though not having done it myself with a UK carrier I don't know if the are any caveats. Perhaps someone else here can provide additional insight and tips for a smooth experience.

He did say in the title his iPad is a Retina model, so he should be good to go once he gets a SIM.

I was told by verizon that I could buy a prepaid global data package here for $25 for 100mgb!
All Uk cariers sell PAYG data nano sims (GSM)available over the counter in their High Street stores and most of them are on every High Street
