Problem opening compound clips?

Hi Guys I wondering if any of you could help me out with my dilema.

I am finishing off a project in Final Cut X that was edited by another editor.

I have a hard drive with all his project files and all the media on it and (obviously) when I open the project timeline in my Final Cut X, all of the media is offline.

My problem is that 3/4 of the project timeline consists of compound clips and I cannot get the compound clips to split apart, so I can't relink the media to the original clips inside the compound clips. The actual seperate clips in the timeline I have been able to relink, but is there a way that I relink the files inside the compound clips when they won't seperate again?

The original editor said to duplicate the project without compound clips, but I can't see an option anywhere that I can do that.

He is now on holidays (of course) and is uncontactable.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

So what happens when you double-click or right click and choose open in Time Line…either from the event browser or the project? Nothing at all?

I'm not sure where the duplicate project strategy would take you. But when you right click in the Project Library and choose Duplicate, a dialogue window opens up. It's contextual and if you choose the third option (project + used clips) you can choose all clips or compound and multiclip only. You might experiment and see whether any solutions open up…

Good luck.

Yeah nothing happens, it just makes that thudding error sound and the option to 'break apart clips' is unavailable from the menu's.

I tried all the different Duplicate options and all it did each time was create a new event with the clips I was actually able to relink in them.

It's such a ball ache! I can't believe he has done this to me 😟

Try a couple of things. Put the playhead over one of the compounds and press Shift-F. What happens? You should get taken to the compound clip in the browser.

Can you right-click on the clip that isn't a compound and select open in timeline? Does that work?

Also select all the clips in the project and go to Relink Project Files. What happens?

Yep it does that, but then what lol

Yes the solo clips I have relinked will open in a new timeline with the clip in it and some of the compounds do open in a timeline as well, but I still can't break them apart.

It only gives me the list of clips that aren't compoud clips to relink.

That shouldn't happen. If you click all, you should see all the clips, including the ones in the compounds.

If you can open the compounds from the browser, can you relink there. It should update in the project.

Have you tried relinking the event clips including the compounds? They should update the project as well.

Nope the compounds aren't listed at all, just the music, the few clips that aren't compounds.

They won't open in the browser.

Ok this may be a problem. I don't actually have an event from this guy loaded into my FCX, just his projects. I only have one event folder on the hard drive that was given to me, but how do I get that event into my FCX? I have tried quitting and putting it into the final cut events folder and then reopening again and the event shows up in the library, but when I click on it, it just comes up with import media, there is nothing listed within the event. Or do I need to import all the media again?

How can you be taken to the browser if there is no event?

It sounds like you don't have any of the media. The media is supposed to be in the event folder and appear in the event browser.

Well I tried doing that but it didn't help.

They have given me all the materials seperately without just transferring it across properly by copying the final cut folders and file structures, so nothing will link up again. There was no original media folder in the one event they did send me and moving the media into it didn't help so I am gonna just have to start from scratch again.

Thanks again for your help Tom, sorry to be such a pain in the butt!

Thank God it's only 7 minutes long and there's a bit of stuff there I was able to salvage.
