How do I change screen resolution for HP Compaq LA2205wg above allowed setting?

I recently started running my 13" Macbook Pro (purchased Feb. '13) with an HP Compaq LA2205wg monitor connected via VGA. The display is somewhat blurry and the colors are off. The monitor says ideal resolution is 1680x1050, though it is only running at 1440x900. I tried changing it via Apple system preferences, but the highest available display is 1440x900. The menu on the monitor offers no option to alter this setting. Any ideas to get this HP display to 1650x1050?

Also please clarify your exact MBP model to have a look in its specs, some 13" laptops have a native resolution of 1440x900 which may explain the exact behavior.

The model number should be listed on the bottom of the MBP:

If you cannot find this information you may also open the System Profiler / System Information and locate the model identifier:

How are you connecting to the monitor(s) ?

1)

COMPUTER A -> MONITOR A

COMPUTER B -> MONITOR B

2)

COMPUTER A -+-> MONITOR A

|

+-> MONITOR B

if (1) then try the configurations:

COMPUTER A -> MONITOR B

COMPUTER B -> MONITOR A

what result do you get?

if (2) then how are you connecting to both external monitors?

What kind of graphics card do you have?

how much VRAM do you have?

What kind of adapters are you using?
